Posture

Posture and neck

It is common for staff working at the desk to bend their head forward usually to view the items they are processing. The further you bend forward the more the strain you put on your on your back and neck. Eye strain and headache are often associated with this position. Adjust the PC monitor to suit you.

Be sure to move your head back to the correct position whenever possible and loosen the muscles in your neck by moving your head.

The exercises section will show you how to help stretch these muscles.

Angles of the hand

In each diagram below, the areas above or below each blue line represent areas of excessive bending. At all times, avoid excessive bending of the wrist, particularly when handling books to check in, discharge and shelve.

Where the fingers and hands are not applying full force and fingers are fairly straight e.g. typing.

Where the fingers are bent and applying a higher force. e.g. gripping a book.

Where the wrist is bent to the side. e.g pushing books along a shelf.
