Moving collections

The task of moving collections involves continuous heavy work. You should take appropriate breaks.

Working in pairs is the most efficient way of moving collections. It allows staff to alternate tasks within the process. Another advantage is the ability to pass books from one level to another, which saves bending and getting up from the floor or down from a step stool.

Staff need to pace themselves while undertaking this task and understand the physical capabilities and limitations of their colleague.

Main Points

Plan the process and be prepared to change if it’s not working as expected.
Have the trolley in a position that is convenient for placing books on and requires minimal twisting.
Develop a routine and pace that doesn’t put any undue pressure on an individual, i.e. holding the book while waiting for the other staff member to take it.
Avoid excessive bending of the wrist.
Don’t use a forceful grip, only use the required pressure and keep the grip expansion small.
Swap positions regularly to avoid carrying out a repetitive task for too long.
Put one row of books on a trolley only.
Fill two trolleys and push one each to the new section.
Sit on a step stool when passing books from the lower shelves.
Be careful not to drop books on your partner.
